Charlie Nguyen hopes to find a satisfactory movie script through comic contest

Charlie Nguyen hopes to find unique stories to turn into movies like the big studios in Hollywood and Japan have been doing.

Director Charlie Nguyen and Australian filmmaker Paul Brenner recently organized a comic creation contest Comink first season.

The contest is for those who are passionate about telling stories with drawings, regardless of level or experience. The biggest requirement is that the work must be unpublished, and must be original.

Among the contestants, notable is the appearance of actress Nhung Kate – Johnny Tri Nguyen’s girlfriend. She did not use the stage name Nhung Kate to participate in the contest with her sister Duong Hoai Thuong.

Sharing with the media, Nhung Kate said she is quite busy with the filming and promotion schedule of the movie The Continental – a prequel series about the famous big screen assassin character John Wick. Even so, she still supported her sister in completing the exam and only withdrew at the final stage.

Work Dragon descendant composed by two sisters won the consolation prize. Nhung Kate revealed that the work was drawn based on the script of her boyfriend Johnny Tri Nguyen.

Talking more about the contest, director Charlie Nguyen said he has been a big fan of comic books since he was 4 or 5 years old. Growing up, he was also associated with a living space with many comic works.

From initial contact, he liked stories told through images.

Regarding the reason for organizing the comic creation contest, Charlie Nguyen said: “Vietnam is a comic book consumption market. We are not as strong in composing and producing comics as other countries. If you ask someone to name famous comics, the answer will probably be a series from other countries, not a work of Vietnam.

I think with such a large population and comic-loving community, we will have young people who wish to create their own stories. We want to see a generation of talented young people with interesting stories, bearing the color and cultural identity of Vietnam.”

According to Charlie Nguyen, he hopes to find unique stories to turn into movies or television series, like the big studios in Hollywood and Japan have been doing.

Comink The first season ended after more than a year of launching, with 1 entries. Many contestants participated with 170 works with 2 different themes. The final round is a competition of 2 works. Finally, the jury selected the 26 best works to award First, Second, Third and 7 Consolation prizes.

In season 2, director Charlie Nguyen said the organizers will accept works that combine contestants and AI technology to support the realization of ideas on drawings. According to him, the application of artificial intelligence in artistic creation is a general trend. If used properly, AI will be a good tool to support authors. Don’t worry too much about AI usurping humans in creativity.
