COMINK Comic Contest 2022: Spreading comic culture to the young Vietnamese generation

In September and October, the COMINK Comic Contest 2022 had its debut at major universities in the Ho Chi Minh city.

Recently, COMINK Comic Contest 2022 cooperated with the school to organize a series of Talkshows with the theme “Comic industry and comic ecosystem” at schools such as FPT University, Hoa Sen University and American University. Art. The program took place in a vibrant atmosphere with the enthusiastic participation of young students to listen and learn about comic book culture as well as its continuous development.

The sharing session had the presence of Director Charlie Nguyen – Co-founder of COMINK Studio, Mr. Thierry Nguyen – Founder and Art Director of Bad Clay Studio, Mr. To Quoc Nghi – Founder of FM Studio, FMShop & Dai Viet History Project Ky Nhan, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hieu – Marketing Manager of Phan Thi Company and Mr. Duong Minh Tam – Director of One Heart Pictures Company, are also the Organizing Committee of the COMINK Comic Contest. Here, experts had the opportunity to discuss and share their perspectives on the “various forms” of comics and their evolution over time.

In many countries around the world, the comic book ecosystem is thriving and has a great influence on popular culture, the most popular being the form from stories to movies. These include classic works such as Doraemon, Detective Conan, Superhero Squad, Iron Man… More recently, we can know about the webtoon wave (online comics) in Korea has also “made waves” with countless television and movie works born from webtoons and attracting a large number of viewers around the world.

It can be said that comics today do not only exist in the form of printed books like the way audiences read them a decade ago, but have gradually transformed to adapt to the digital age. When dressed in technology, comic book culture further develops its unlimited potential when it can reach all readers, on all topics. The main proof is the success in adapting content into popular cinema works, along with the huge revenue that comic book ecosystems bring.

By attending the Talkshow series, the students partly understood the prospects of the country’s comic industry, when there is still much untapped potential. Here, many questions were asked to the speakers about how Vietnamese comics make their mark on the world, what is the path from comics to movies? The speakers also commented that this is a great time for young artists to try to create a comic book ecosystem that reflects Vietnamese national identity.

With that ambition, the COMINK Comic Contest 2022 has received a lot of interest and registration from talented artists across the country. This is also the first comic creation contest to organize free training courses on skills and experience sharing specifically for participants, with guidance from industry experts. The contest begins accepting registrations and entries for the first round – Moderation round from July 24 to December 31, 2022.
