According to Jenna Anderson’s article on Comicbook, James Gunn revealed that The Human Target by authors Tom King and Greg Smallwood is his favorite comic book series of 2023. The 12-episode series begins in 2022. and continues to publish this year.
In The Human Target, the character Christopher Chance made a living by being a living target. He would disguise himself as his clients and pose as the target of assassination attempts against them. This is clearly a dangerous “job” and you always have to risk your life.
He toyed with life and death and had a remarkable career until his next heist involving Lex Luthor. Things didn’t go according to plan. It was an assassination that Chance did not anticipate could cause him great harm.
Ultimately, Chance has just 12 days to discover who in the DC Comics universe hates Lex Luthors so much that he wants to kill him with a slow-acting poison. At this point, finding clues is not only to complete the initial assigned task but also to rescue Chance himself.
Author King explained in a 2021 interview that he was surprised when asked to write about Human Target. He immediately found about the original content by Len Wein and Dick Giordano. “It’s absolutely amazing,” King exclaimed.
“This could be something special. Maybe an opportunity to do all the best things I want for my project,” King said. It would be a good story about a guy facing death; What will he think or do, what will his mood be like when there are only a few years left in his life?
Also according to Comicbook, Gunn said the expected list of works that can be made: Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing and The Authority… This long-term plan has may include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost and the animated series Creature Commandos.
